K9 Handler - Vapor Wake®

VWK9 is seeking a K9 Handler to support a variety of customers in multiple locations.  The primary work location is Anniston, AL.  Successful candidates will be flexible to travel, sometimes overnight, to perform Canine Detection services.  The Vapor Wake® Canine Handler will utilize operant and classical training techniques to train and work canines in detection of explosives and other materials as necessary.  Prepare canines for operational missions to include acclimation into new and various environments.  Properly secure, handle, transport and account for canine training aids IAW federal laws and company Standard Operating Procedures.  Evaluate and document canine behavior to determine training needs to meet operational and contractual requirements.  Effectively document canine training IAW company standards.  Perform operational searches as required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide Canine Welfare for all canines IAW company standards, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and federal law.
  • Follow established training protocols, company directives and the Auburn University Vapor Wake® Patent in the training and handling of canines.
  • Properly utilize canine training equipment to include safety equipment for canines and trainers.
  • Handle and train with multiple canines as directed and to ensure contract compliance.
  • Secure and account for canine training aids, equipment, company vehicles, canine trailers and company assets and resources.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of training areas and company vehicles, canine trailers, resources and facilities.
  • Arranges operational exercises in locations that supports the operational mission.
  • Follow standard operating procedures when conducting and performing operational searches and/or training canines for operational missions.
 Qualifications and Experience:
  • High School Diploma required
  • Experience in canine handling / training within a federal agency or an organization with major canine detection/training programs preferred.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation
Essential Physical / Mental Functions:
  • Dynamically lift (start at floor in static position and lift through task) an actual dog, or a reasonable facsimile thereof, weighing approximately 90 lbs. to a height up to 60”.
  • Dynamically lift an actual crate, or a reasonable facsimile thereof, with or without an actual dog or a reasonable facsimile, to a height up to 60”.
  • Dynamically lift an actual 40 lbs. dog food bag up to 30” and dump into a container.
  • Dynamically push an actual crate or a reasonable facsimile, with or without an actual dog or a reasonable facsimile, on a table, desk, or other flat surface.
  • Dynamically resist up to 200 lbs. pulling impact.Pull on a hand held dynamometer (equipped with pull tools) to measure the maximum pull force capabilities.
  • Carry an actual dog or a reasonable facsimile weighing up to 90 lbs. for a distance of 25’.
  • Kneel (on one or both knees) and squat for a sustained period up to at least one - two minutes.
  • While in a prone position, crawl forward for up to 25’.
  • Intermittently walk on a treadmill and stair master for 30 minutes.  Rotate between the treadmill and stair master every 5 – 10 minutes changing speed and elevation.
